Karma Yoga is selfless service, without attachment to the “fruits” of our efforts. Simply put, we do not get emotionally involved in the action we choose to perform. We do not become overly excited, upset, angry, frustrated etc. when the result of our effort is not attained. We offer ourselves and our gifts for the sake of offering. We surrender to being an instrument of the divine and we allow the divine to flow through us as we serve others (not only our fellow beings, but all of creation – animals, Pachamama, Apu’s etc.)This can be a very difficult concept in the West, as most things we do are for some kind of reward (like Pavlov’s dog). We work for money. We love to be loved in return. We volunteer to feel like we are good, altruistic individuals giving back to our communities. We raise our children so that they can grow into adulthood and care for us in old age. In short, we give to get. Ask yourself – have you ever given just for the sake of giving? With no strings attached. This is the essence of Karma Yoga.Real spiritual evolution begins with selfless service. Through this practice we purify our minds and our hearts. We let go of the burdens, the confines, the restrictions, the scars from soul-wounds that accumulate by living our lives. Egoism, hatred, jealously, comparison and selfishness vanish as you begin to focus on giving to others. Humility, innocence, love, kindness and tolerance are fostered. The illusion of separateness disappears. You do not lose anything through Karma Yoga. Every offering from the heart brings purification and contentment. The more we offer, the more we delineate new samskaras or impressions in the mind that propel us forward to do more good and spread more kindness. So, start with what you can manage. Embrace the energy of Divine Service. Think of how you can use your intellect, your talents, your wealth, your privilege, your gifts for the betterment of others. Begin now – with fiery enthusiasm. One person can change the whole world through humility, love and service.“…do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, to all people you can, in every place you can, at all times you can, with all the zeal, strength, love and interest you can, as long as ever you can. Your nature must be to do good. Doing good and bringing happiness to others brings goodness and happiness to you… The more you spend your energy in elevating and serving others, the more divine energy will flow into you.” Swami Sivananda
