The REDress Project

Red Dress Day has its origins in the impactful work of Canadian Métis artist Jaime Black. In 2010, Black launched the “REDress Project,” an art installation meant to shed light on the alarming number of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. By hanging empty red dresses in public spaces—on trees, lampposts, and more—Black created a haunting visual that symbolized both the grief and strength of the Indigenous community.

What began as a powerful art exhibit soon evolved into a movement. Indigenous communities, allies, and advocates across Canada and internationally adopted the red dress as a symbol for raising awareness and demanding justice. Red Dress Day is now an annual event, bringing people together to honor the women who have been lost and to push for action on their behalf.

The Shamanic Yoga Institute actively spreads awareness and participates in Red Dress Day as part of its ongoing commitment to honor Indigenous traditions and advocate for justice. Recognizing the deep spiritual connection between land, community, and healing, the Institute uses its platform to bring attention to the tragic issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

Each year on Red Dress Day, the Shamanic Yoga Institute hosts special gatherings and ceremonies, where participants are invited to reflect, meditate, and practice yoga in solidarity. Red dresses are displayed in sacred spaces during these events, serving as both a visual reminder of the lives lost and a call to collective healing. The Institute encourages dialogue about the importance of supporting Indigenous communities and works alongside local Indigenous leaders to promote education and advocacy efforts.

Through its teachings, the Shamanic Yoga Institute fosters a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all beings, inspiring students and participants to take action, honour the red dress symbol, and help amplify the voices calling for justice.
